And I was like, why are you so obsessed with me?

The title is the first line spoken in the Mariah Carey song "Obsessed." I love that song. I guess you could say that I am truly "obsessed" with it! :) I wouldn't call myself a HUGE Mariah fan, and I don't think I would buy tickets to see her live or anything, but I was thinking about it today, and I have EVERY cd she has ever put out, and I have LOVED every one of them. So I guess that does make me a big fan of her music. Some of my childhood favorites of hers are Always Be My Baby , Hero, and then of course her collaboration with Boyz II Men, One Sweet Day. I always wanted to be a singer, so I used to stand in my room and belt out Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton. Turns out I don't have the same vocal skills they do, but I still love singing along with them! :)

Speaking of music, John Mayer has a new CD coming out. He has already released the first single. I'm not crazy about it, but it's okay. It talks about "getting stoned" though and that's just not my thing at all, so maybe I just don't relate to it. I do like that he mentions Austin though! :) Anyways, the reason I bring this up...sometimes I watch/listen to VH1 in the mornings when I am getting ready (I detest the morning DJs in Dallas, I miss Bobby Bones from Austin), and the video for "Who Says" came on today. I have always had a crush on John Mayer, but in this video he is extra amazing. He looks so handsome in it, so that makes me love the video (even though I don't really love the song). Taylor Swift also just re-released her CD with extra songs. Lady Gaga is releasing The Fame Monster in a few weeks and I can not wait! She just released the first single, Bad Romance and I LOVE IT!

Still on the subject of music, I AM GOING TO A CONCERT on Sunday! :) Yay! Stacy and I are going to see Hanson and Hello-Goodbye. This will be Stacy's sixth Hanson concert and I am so glad that she turned me on to them. They are also activists which makes them EVEN COOLER! They have evolved since the days of Mmm-Bop, and are an amazing band. If you are not familiar with their music, listen to the song I posted below.



Stacy and I also just joined Dallas County Young Democrats and we are going to their Speaker Series and Reception on November 13th. The founder of TOMS shoes, Blake Mycoskie, is going to be there, and I can not wait to hear what he has to say!

Today I had "CPI" training. This is non-violent crisis intervention training, where you learn how to safely and legally do restraints. They are always used as a last resort, but in my classroom I can see how it is important to know what to do in these situations. I felt like I was training to be a prison guard or something though, it is kinda scary to have to think about using these techniques on students, and I really hope I never have to. I am glad I will know how though, in case a situation does arise. The training flew by today (part of that is because it was only 8:30-2:30, with a morning break, an hour lunch, and an afternoon break, and because we were up practicing the holds and restraints), but I still would have rather been at school with the kids. I love my job. I can't believe how much I miss them when I am gone. I wish I could adopt all 12 of them. Okay, maybe not, but I wish they all lived on my street so I could go and play with them whenever I wanted. Okay, that doesn't sound right either. I'll just say that these kids have already made a HUGE impact on me, and I can't imagine not getting to keep up with them after this year. I wish I could be in touch with them forever. There, is that better? :)

Zac is sick. I think he has the flu. He already put in for a sub tomorrow (Thursday...his game day...this is a big deal) and he is going to try to get into a doctor first thing in the morning. His fever is 103 right now. Bless his heart. I am glad that he only has one more week of football...all that work takes a toll on him, not to mention the added stress that goes along with it! :(

Welcoming Bo

Throughout the campaigns and elections, I was so curious as to what type of dog the Obama's would get, assuming Barack won the presidency. I was excited yesterday to find out they finally got their dog, a Portugese Water dog, also known as a "portie." He is named Bo, after Michelle's father, who was nicknamed "Diddly." Look how cute this picture is:
Makes them seem like a real family (I mean they are a real family, but I guess I mean it makes them seem like the average American family). I remember when Chelsea got Socks. I didn't even like cats, but I thought it was cool that one lived at the WhiteHouse, and that the president had a pet. I still think that is cool, and I think the girls will love having Bo around. This is an interesting video about the history of inauguration, as well as Obama's personal message about Tuesday. I am looking forward to this day, and just watching CNN talk about the inauguration gave me goosebumps. How beautiful that we live in a country where the people have a say in who leads us and how we are lead. Last week I finished the book A Thousand Splendid Suns about two women born and raised in Afghanistan. It is by the author of The Kite Runner, and it is AMAZING!!! The book historically accounts the never-ending wars and shift of rulers and power Afghanistan has experienced over the last 50 years. I absolutely take America, the place, the concept, the freedom, everything about it, for granted. I am not proud to say that, but I do. As Barack Obama says, to peacefully hand over power of the country to a person that WE elected, is such an amazing thing. Maybe the book I just finished helped me realize this, or maybe I am finally getting old enough to have these kind of thoughts, but whatever it is, I am grateful. I am aware and I do NOT want to take this kind of thing for granted. I can not wait to watch the ceremony on Tuesday, and to hear Obama say these words: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
What an exciting day for America, and for little old me! Because after all, this country is made up of single, individual, non-important people like me, who come together to make big and important decisions! :)

Dear Malia and Sasha,

I know that you've both had a lot of fun these last two years on the campaign trail, going to picnics and parades and state fairs, eating all sorts of junk food your mother and I probably shouldn't have let you have. But I also know that it hasn't always been easy for you and Mom, and that as excited as you both are about that new puppy, it doesn't make up for all the time we've been apart. I know how much I've missed these past two years, and today I want to tell you a little more about why I decided to take our family on this journey. When I was a young man, I thought life was all about me—about how I'd make my way in the world, become successful, and get the things I want. But then the two of you came into my world with all your curiosity and mischief and those smiles that never fail to fill my heart and light up my day. And suddenly, all my big plans for myself didn't seem so important anymore. I soon found that the greatest joy in my life was the joy I saw in yours. And I realized that my own life wouldn't count for much unless I was able to ensure that you had every opportunity for happiness and fulfillment in yours. Friday, Zac and I got to Austin about 3:30 and went straight to the vet to pick up Molly's meds. That is honestly the best vet clinic in the world. For any readers who live in Austin, you should really try Arbor Animal Clinic. I have never seen a group of people who care more about a pet, and that pet owners questions and concerns! When we got to Mom and Pops house, we went out to eat at one of our favorite mexican food restaurants, Santa Rita. After that, we dropped the boys off at the house and mom and I went to Tar-jay. We happily shopped, while the boys suffered through at 20 minute power outage, due to high winds. Since the house was dark, they went for a walk. :) One of the first times Zac and my dad were around each other, my dad asked Zac if he would like to go for a walk. Zac of course felt obligated and replied yes, but they ended up being gone for an hour. Zac was in boots and a button up shirt (about to take me on a date) and not being used to the hills and humidity that is Austin, he was sweaty and tired when they got home. He always jokes about that time my dad tried to kill him by taking him on a long walk, haha. Anyways, Liz and Andy and Madeline got to Austin about 8ish and we had a fun evening hanging out and catching up. Madeline played with all her favorite toys at Grandma and Pappy's house.

Saturday morning, Papa used his two son-in-laws to help him cut down a few dead branches off of a tree in the front yard. I was so scared the whole time he was up there...35 feet in the air!

When Liz got dressed Saturday morning, I saw she had on a blue shirt. I had brough a blue shirt (the exact same shade) to wear that day, so I put it on, just to annoy her. Haha, it worked! She made me change into something else, as soon as we took the picture. My dad was not happy because it was "Jayhawk blue" and the Horns were playing Kansas. haha

Saturday afternoon, I met Lynn at Tatem's and us girls loaded up and headed to City Hall for a Proposition 8 Protest. There were about 3,000 people in attendance, and it was amazing. I took lots of pictures...to see them all, click HERE.After experiencing my first protest, Mom and Liz and Madeline came and picked me up and we went to the mall. It was so crowded...the recession has definitely not hit Austin, Texas!!! Liz did most of the shopping (okay all of it) so Madeline and I took a quick massage break at Brookstone.

Madeline learned how to do "Hook em Horns!" (She has been doing "guns up" for awhile now.) Sunday morning we had Hardwick Family portraits at Mayfield Park. Obviously we have not gotten them back from the photographer, but I CANT WAIT! I think they are going to be really good! Austinites...if you haven't been to Mayfield Park, GO! There are tons of peacocks and it is beautiful. I am looking forward to going back sometime soon. Sunday afternoon was Eliza's FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY!!! She was so cute and fun and seemed to have a blast.

She had lots of friends and family at the party. It was such a special occasion! I think the best was watching her in her new swing though...

As you see, it was a BUSY but fun weekend! No wonder I am so tired, haha!

Venting about H8TE...

WARNING-This is something I feel passionate about, so my writing is borderline angry. I am sorry to be so negative, but I am more sorry that things are the way they are...
As you know, I was overjoyed last week when Obama was elected President. I felt like America was finally making progress. I am still excited about it. However, my excitement has been somewhat muted by another decision some American's made last week...to ban gay marriage and legally institute descrimination. Tuesday's vote was deeply disappointing to all who believe in equal treatment under the law. All of us are harmed when any of us are discriminated against or have our fundamental rights taken away. As the proud sister of a gay brother, this personally affects me and my family. But I honestly think that even if I did not know a single gay person, I would never vote to make anyone a second-class citizen."Seperate but equal" is impossible...its garbage...haven't we learned that? I have told some of my friends this before, but I fully believe that one day our kids (or maybe our grandkids, but hopefully not that far in the future) will be shocked and ashamed that there was a time America descriminated against Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered people. When I was a child and I learned that black people could not vote, and then later learned about Jim Crow laws, I was disgusted and amazed. How were we that cruel? Why wasn't it obvious that ALL humans deserve to be treated with respect? One group of people is not better than another group. We are all the same group...HUMAN (or if you wanna get more specific...American!) I think California's Proposition 8 and all the laws that passed are every bit as bad as those Jim Crow laws. I believe that love should never be forbidden, and I can not understand who or why anyone would choose to deny our brothers and sisters an equal shot at happiness. If you claim it is because of your religion, I dont want to hear it, because I am a Christian, and I was taught the Golden Rule, to "treat others how you want to be treated" and I was also taught that it is not my place to judge anyone...I will leave that for my Maker. Statistics say that about 10% of the United States is Gay. That is a huge percent! 1 in 10 people, y'all! How can we do this to them? We are not only letting them down, but we are letting ourselves down, because we are choosing hate and descrimination over acceptance and equality. It's wrong, and I'm angry. For me, last week was like "two steps forward (electing Obama), one step back (states passing this ban)." Next time this question comes up...please do not choose to deny 10% of American's the rights they deserve and are owed. What if you went to bed married and then woke up the next day not married? What if you spent a ton of money to have the perfect ceremony to celebrate your love and then it was all taken away, and you really just threw a big Valentine's party? What if someone told you that YOU could not be married? I am assuming you are a born-and-raised , hard working, honest American? So is my baby brother...and for that matter, so are most of the people who were just denied the priveledge to marry that we "straight" people take for granted!
Not only were marriage rights stripped in Cali, but Florida, Arizona, and Arkansas passed laws saying that you have to be married to adopt children, which means that both heterosexual and LGBT single adults can't adopt. Since same sex couples can't get married, they certainly can't adopt either. Did you know that Eli could be fired from any job just for being gay? The anti-descrimination laws that were passed for gender, age, race, ethnicity, and religion apperantly exempt sexuality. Why? Did you also know that you, me, or any Texas worker (especially in schools) can be fired for simply being an ally, because of being suspected of being gay, or "promoting homosexuality" (which in Texas can be argued as creating an uncomfortable sexual environment/sexual harassment.) The list of negative consequences these laws have produced goes on, and on, and on. How could we do this, especially in this day and age? It is dispicable. I can't even say anymore because I am already too upset, just from writing all this. It is a shame. To Eli, my gay friends, and every gay person out there...I'm sorry. I hope one day this wrong will be righted, and I hope that day is sooner than later. (I also hope that one day we have a Gay president! Hey, people said we would never have a black prez, and look at the progress we have made! It will happen!)

Election week wrap-up

Of course this week there has been so much buzz and excitement everywhere! I have been surfing the net and seing so many cool articles, videos, and pictures. I just thought I would share some of my favorites with yall...

This video clip comes from Fox News, the most conservative media, and it discloses stuff about Sarah Palin, such as the fact she did not know Africa was a continent, and did not know which countries were a part of NAFTA. Haha, I know both of those, maybe I should run for VP. :)

How amazing was McCain's Concedence Speech? I know we all watched it Tuesday night, but I had to watch it again, just to take it all in. My favorite quote was at the end when he said "I call on all Americans, as I have often in this campaign, to not despair of our present difficulties, but to believe always in the promise and greatness of America."


I have always known that Obama was an amazing speaker, but on this night, the words were twice as sweet! I loved the entire speech, but I had some favorite quotes:
-"It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, democrats and republicans, black, white, hispanic, asian, native american, gay, straight, disabled and not-disabled. Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals, or a collection of red states and blue states. We are and always will be THE UNITED STATES of America!"
-"This victory alone is not the change we seek...it is only the chance for us to make that change!"
-"So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other."

Election Day Coverage

If you know me, you know I am NOT a morning person, and it takes something significant to get me out of bed early in the morning. Yesterday counted as a significant day...I woke up around 7 and was so excited that I could not fall back asleep. This was the day I had been waiting for! I went to the Ellis County Democratic Headquarters and volunteered for a few hours, answering phones, and walk-in questions. Alot of people just needed to find out where their poll location was, which was pretty easy, and very fun. I just kept thinking "this is such a neat experience...I might never get an opportunity like this again!" The best part of the whole morning was all the neat people I met, who were also volunteering for the same cause as myself. It is nice to be surrounded by people with your same ideals and beliefs! One man I met was a Nurse Antitheses, and looked EXACTLY like a famous actor. It was mind-boggling how much he looked like him...I kind of wanted to ask if it really was him, haha! This picture is of the actor, but it is also exactly what my new friend looked like. Another one of the fascinating people I met is a retired exec of Boy Scouts of America. He played football at UNT and then played for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is best friends with "Mean Joe Green." Another volunteer, Roark is a professor of law at SMU, and used to be a public defender in Washington D.C. It was a neat, neat morning. I was tired the rest of the afternoon, but it was so worth it! :) How often do you get to work together with people who are perfect strangers at 8am, but feel like dear old friends by noon!? It was amazing.
So you either know me personally, of know me from reading my blog, but either way...you have probably realized that I do not mind being a dork every now and then. For some reason yesterday I decided to be a reporter (maybe because I have been watching so much news and CNN lately, haha). I made a reporter style video at 7:30 in the morning, and another one at the end of the night. When I got out of class at 7pm, we headed to downtown Fort Worth to attend a Tarrant County Democrats party held at the Hilton. It was a blast...even better than I could have imagined! Stacy and her dad and friend Rachel met us there, so that made it even better! The ballroom was decorated beautifully and there was such a neat mixture of people there. Anyone who says that "only black people voted for Obama" (I have heard people say that with my own ears!) is sadly mistaken. There were all different walks of life and several different races, ethnicities and socio-economic status's represented at the party...kinda like America! ;) Everyone cheered and cried, jumped, and hugged...I cant imagine watching it at home. This was such an amazing and historical night. Words obviously cant explain how I felt and what the ambiance of the room was (lots of excitement, anticipation, and HOPE). I had an amazing and eventful Election Day, and took lots of pictures. Enjoy this little video montage I made of pics and vids:

Yes, I am so excited and relieved with the turnout of the elections! Barack Obama is our new president, y'all! AMAZING! I have lots to say, and plenty of pics, so i will be posting soon. But I just had to post one to say how HAPPY I am! :)

You guessed it! Zac and I voted today and I was on a high all afternoon. :) This was my second presidentional election to vote in (although two seperate Poll Officials asked me today if this was my first time to vote...maybe I look young?), and I was sad that I have not gotten to use a booth, curtain, or electronic voting either time! We just got a paper and a pen and had to sit at a table in bubble in our choices, like a standardized test. It was very anti-climactic, in fact I told Zac that I almost wished I had waited until election day so I would have that exciting buzz. Except that we had to wait in a long line today, so I can not imagine how it will be on Tuesday! I was excited to get an "I Voted Today" sticker, but annoyed when I got to cheerleading that afternoon wearing it. Alot of girls asked who I voted for (I did not tell them), and several had really harsh remarks. Here are a few things I heard in the hour span I was with them:
-I hope you voted "NO-bama."
-If you voted for Obama, I'm gonna kill you. Like, really...murder you!
-Hey, did y'all know that Obama is a terrorist AND he hates white people!
Needless to say, it got really old, and I was not about to go there, so instead we just started stretching, but I really wanted to scream "yall are brainwashed! Do any of you watch CNN or read factual information, or do you just trust your parents and bogus emails?" Anyways, it was kind of bothersome, but I didn't let it bring me down! I just hope that next Tuesday I am not dissappointed! :) Oh, and if you have not voted yet, I reccomend you watch this video: (that happens to have like 5 ba-jillion celebs in it, though Borat might be my fave in this clip!)

Voting has closed on my Presidential Election Poll. In case you were wandering, here is the breakdown: Obama won with 10 votes (66%), and McCain had 4 votes (26%). One person (6%), did not like either candidate. Very interesting! I wonder if my little mock-election will be similar to the real one? I read that "globally speaking," for every ONE person that likes McCain , there are FOUR that like Obama! Kinda crazy huh? That is a BIG difference!

PS-Can November 4th please get here soon, so I can quit being worried/obsessed/consumed by this election stuff? Oh yeah, and one more thing...

Sad, Disgusting, Disturbing...

Let me first say that I know that not all Palin/McCain supporters are like this! I have several friends who are Republicans, and we are all entitled to our own beliefs, that is fine. What is not fine, is hatred and ignorance! Have these people been brainwashed? Where do they get thier "facts"? It shocks me, that in 2008, there are still people who see race as such a problem. As a white, Christian, American person, I am embarressed and ashamed by these people. I know we all have different views on "hot topics" (such as gay marriage, abortion, etc...) but there is this thing called TOLERENCE! It might not be what you believe, or what you think is best, but be tolerable of others! We CAN all get along, if people would stop HATING!

And because I never want to end a post on an upsetting note, here is a video that I LOVE. It isn't new, but it inspires me and gives me hope, not to mention that I think it was very well done. I would like to challenge you to actually listen to the words that are spoken and sung. It gives me goosebumps...in a GOOD way! :)

And for the real Obama fans out there (ahem, Stacy) watch THIS video. It gets me pumped up, and its interesting to see which celebs are supporting and promoting him. It is another song, very pretty! When I started this post, I felt very icky and upset...now I feel better! :)

Word Up!

My best friend Stacy is super creative and computer savvy. Well, I just learned where she gets it from...her father. Stacy's dad has worked forever in the field of semantics, which is "the study of how meaning in language is created by the use and interrelationships of words, phrases, and sentences." Well, he just made a video montage of Sarah Palin speaking and it is quite fun to watch. I am impressed that people can make 6 minute videos with a million different clips, and obvisouly it didn't take him long, since some of the footage is from the past few days! Here it is...

Is it bad, that sometimes when it's a quick picture, I can't tell whether it is Tina Fey or Sarah Palin? (Yes, you should not have admitted that Julia!) Haha, that's been happening to me for a few days now, and I have to think about which person it is. Ooops! In my defense, they really do look alot alike though!

15-14

It is 12:30, so I should be in bed cuddling with my husband, but instead I am watching the VP debates on CNN.com and blogging. I avoid discussing too much politics on here, but I will say I am not a fan of Sarah Palin. BUT, I do think she did fairly well tonight. The interviews I have been watching of her and Katie Couric made me think she was going to bomb this debate (because, lets face it, she said some pretty ignorant things over the last week). I think she did pretty well though. I still like Biden better, and I'll go ahead and say it...I want Obama to win. I am scared to think what will happen if he doesn't. I think our nation needs a change and I am ready for the elections to be over. (As long as I get the result I want! haha!)
So you are like, what the heck is "15-14?" (the title of this post) Well, Zac's freshmen played today and they fought to the very last second, but lost by one point! It was heartbreaking. It was one of those games where everyone in the stands (on both sides) were on their feet and yelling, and the tension was high! Those are fun games, but moreso when you win! We were winning the whole game, and then the other team scored with only 4 minutes left in the game. We spent the entire last four minutes moving the ball, a few yards at a time, but the clock ran out. We tried to kick a 40 yard fieldgoal at the end of the game, but it didn't make it. We lost. It was sad. It was a very intense game, and at one point I thought Zac was going to get a Red Card (haha, I am such a soccer girl...I meant to say a techinical or penalty or whatever they call it in football) for yelling at the Refs. When we were driving for a touchdown at the very end, one of the boys was in the endzone and ALMOST caught it. Well, we all thought he had caught it, and Zac was jumping up and down, and I swear he was literally like 3 feet off the ground. Who said short white boys can't jump? haha.
